The eyes vs. ears

Have you ever noticed how we're amazed when big sound comes out of a small pair of loudspeakers? Take the aspen FR5 for example. To a person, folks are stunned at how big the sound coming from these loudspeakers is.

And the opposite seems true. When a full size floor standing loudspeaker does its job few people are impressed. I think the thought process is likely, "well, what would you expect from something that big?"

Now take the example of the speakers hidden behind the veil. Now we cannot see the speakers and we judge them solely by their sound quality without regard for size.

In a sense, this is what we should be doing all the time. But, it's near impossible.

Just as a beat up automobile with a perfect running drive train isn't as desirable as a beautiful car with mediocre performance, we tend to let our eyes judge performance.

I get it. I truly do because we're all susceptible to it. It takes training and determination to battle it.

I can recall how hard it was for me to judge prototype new circuits built on particle board chassis with clip leads and tape. But, over time, I just learned to look away and simply listen.

It's a good and healthy skill if you can master it.
