Granularity

Granularity isn’t a common audio term—but maybe it should be.

It’s that ultra-fine resolution in a great system, the kind that lets you hear into the texture of the music. Not just the note, but how the note is shaped. The grain of the bow across a violin string. The inner details of decay after a cymbal strike.

It’s not the same as detail in the usual sense. Some systems emphasize detail by being bright or analytical. That’s not granularity nor is it desireable.

Granularity is more refined. It’s the micro-layering of sound that reveals complexity without calling attention to itself. It’s resolution with restraint.

And when it’s there, music feels more human.

Granularity is where music's soul lives.
