When my wife Terri built our living room two-channel audio system, she insisted on stand-mount speakers instead of boxes.
When I explained to her the floor space of a box speaker is identical to that of a stand-mount speaker, and, if she went that route, we'd have better bass, she just smiled.
She was fine adding a subwoofer instead.
For many of us, it's all about the look. Speakers stand out in your living space more than electronics ever do.
As a dedicated audio nerd and certified nutjob, I would never have chosen the stand-mount route. Subwoofer or not, I just want the better performance benefits of the bigger box.
There does seem to be a glimmer of hope for the McGowan's living room on the horizon.
Chris unveiled a prototype pair of FR10s to the staff, and I saw Terri's eyes light up.
We won't be able to share anything until closer to the year's end, but...
Fingers crossed.
