Choosing wisely

Remember in the 1989 Indiana Jones movie The Last Crusade, where the knight quips "He chose poorly" after actor Julian Glover's character disintegrated into dust?

That's perhaps a good reason to choose wisely. However, it's good to remember that we can easily get stuck between choices. That too much information or too many choices often paralyze us from making a choice at all—and we move on to something else.

I find audio shows kind of like that. Out of perhaps 30 rooms visited we might discover two or three that really float our boats, but then what? Was it the speakers? The electronics? The room? The setup?

Who knows?

One way out of the dilemma is to be clear about what it is you're hoping for—as opposed to simply being impressed or not.

For example, if you're trying to decide about speakers, going into the decision process knowing your musical tastes, loudness expectations, and room size is really helpful. A pair of aspen FR5s will work wonders in a smallish living room (or even a bigger one) if you're not hoping to play the most dynamic of the Mahler symphonies at live levels.

On the other hand, if your listening habits are for reasonable to loud listening levels with a wide variety of music then perfect!

Going into a decision with a good idea of what you're hoping for really helps.
