While wandering around our local Target store I was struck by the complete elimination of the DVD Blu-Ray movie section. Vanished. Gone. Upon further examination even the little aisle they once had for the Blu-Ray players is gone as well.
Being an old duck that remembers well the era of VHS tape, this complete lack of any form of physical media was a bit of an eye opener.
On the one hand I shouldn't be surprised. The only physical media we own is SACD and CDs for music. We long ago donated our physical video media collection along with its player.
We think of ourselves as technologically cutting edge.
So, it's a real wake up call when the everyday Target down the street's already caught up with us.
Truth is, they marched right on past us and I didn't even notice.
Today you can purchase an Apple TV streaming interface with 128gB of storage and 4K output for $150. You connect that to any television and the world's video library is at your command.
Just a few years ago that would have been right out of Star Trek.
Whether it's a high-end AirLens or a consumer grade video streamer, the world is not just getting connected.
We are already here.
