…is the violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred, and the high end is not without its share of idols and precepts that defy violation.
One such untouchable is the classes of amplifiers: A, B, AB, C, D, F and I am sure I've left out something someone's come up with. We consider these terms sacred because they describe a specific set of rules having mostly to do with bias, but not always. For example, Class D isn't related to bias, while A, B, AB are. Starting with C, these higher order alphabetical classes of amplification are all over the map, describing a wild variety of operational styles.
In the PS Audio Skunkworks we've been playing with a few different types of topologies for amplifiers, trying to wring the most out of a very few dollars, and what we've come up with is really interesting. So interesting that while it's certainly not novel, its results are impressive enough we are thinking of assigning it a new class of amp.
More tomorrow.
