Which is correct?
- Play by the rules if you want to win.
- Rules are meant to be broken.
I suppose this question can only be answered when put in the proper context: you probably want to play by the rules when there’s a cop behind you on the highway, yet breaking the rules is often the genesis of discovery.
When gifted designers tackle projects, they generally start their designs following the rules. Rules offer an easy path towards known results. But then, those interested in pushing performance boundaries burn their rule books and that’s when the fun begins.
Following the rules is a great place to begin, but almost never where innovation lands.
