How many are we?

How many are we?

Watching a TV show the other day, and the main character turned to the other and said, "Ask yourself this question."

Ask yourself?

Who exactly is doing the talking here? Who is yourself?

I think this is more than just a quirk of language. We seem to think of ourselves as multiple people. There's the inner me, the outer me, the secret me, the wanna be me.

Who the heck am I?

The inner me wants to have this or that. A better sound room, and new piece of gear, a new DAC. But the cautious me thinks it's probably best to wait.

I argue with myself.

Then there's the deep down me, the one who could potentially bubble up to the surface, throw caution to the wind, go for the gusto, and have a better pair of speakers.

The many me's are a confusing lot of people. With so many voices, have you ever asked yourself who's in charge?

Wait. Now we're asking ourselves again.

I am so lost.
