On purpose

Is it a mistake if you did it on purpose?

I remember the first time I watched Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy's masterpiece, Best in Show. I thought it was lame because I didn't understand it was a mockumentary.

Once I understood it was a purposeful satire, it went from lame to hilarious.

Years ago, folks who hadn't yet grasped the idea of a passive preamplifier questioned our lack of a gain stage until they understood our intent.

Purity.

Or take, for example, the DirectStream MKII's DSD engine. It was not an afterthought to have spent years writing code that flew in the face of just about every other DAC on the market that was (and remains) PCM based.

We did it on purpose.

Often, it is worth a second look to understand that which stands out from the crowd. It may be different, but that doesn't mean it is a mistake.
