Ear blindness

We all go nose blind to our own cologne.

Same thing happens with our systems. Live with a setup long enough, and even its flaws start sounding “normal.” A dip in the presence region? That’s just how vocals sound. Murky bass? Must be the recording or the room.

Then a friend drops by, or a new piece of kit arrives and it hits you—you've lulled yourself into a false sort of bliss.

You’ve adjusted to something you shouldn’t have.

Our ears are wonderfully adaptable. But that adaptability cuts both ways. If you live with a veil long enough, it becomes invisible. Until someone lifts it.

Sometimes you need to step away, or listen to a live instrument, or play a favorite track on a different system, just to recalibrate.

Better might be just around the corner—but you have to notice it first.
