Listening and hearing

The two words seem the same, but they are not. Listening is casual while hearing is with intent.

I am listening all the time. My ears never go to sleep.

Just the other day, I was asked to go have a listen to a new circuit tweak. Better? Worse? Different? This is the part of the job I love. If it's just different, I take note and report what I observed.

But when listening uncovers better? Now, my focus switches to hearing. Digging deep and exploring different cuts of music to reveal what treasures might await.

Whether it's new gear, circuits, or a fresh new recording that entices me to move from listening to hearing, that's the thrill of it.
