Understanding technology

How much of technology do you need to understand before making a purchasing decision?

Does one need to know the technical differences between an LCD and OLED television to decide which appeals to them more? Is it enough just to pick the one that looks better?

Or how about the differences between an FPGA DSD based DAC and an R2R DAC? While many of us understand there is a fundamental difference between the two technologies, how many of us really understand what's different and why it should or shouldn't matter?

In the end, does understanding technology really matter?

Neodymium vs. ferrite? Lithium-Ion vs. Nickel-Metal Hydride? FET vs. BJT? Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline Silicon? SSD vs. HDD? RCA vs. XLR?

Perhaps simply choosing the one that performs best in your situation is all that is necessary?
